So I don’t know how to start, but almost exactly a month ago, I sent John Green an email about a friend who died due to cancer. I emailed him both explaining my story, and more specifically, about a friend who had been deeply saddened by Mary’s death. I told John Green that I wanted a way in which I could reach out to this friend and let him know that his friends care while respecting his personal boundaries. I asked if John Green could send me a copy of TFiOS with a personalized message to my friend, as he loved that book and re-read it the day that Mary died. John Green sent me the book a month later with a note that said “Dear Connor, May you find the peace that passes all understanding, but does- I believe- exist. With all best wishes, John Green” (at least I think that’s what it says…no offense but the handwriting was mildly difficult to decipher. You will hear no complaints from me though.)

There is no way John Green could have known this, but the book arrived the day of Relay for Life, a community event to raise money to find a cure for cancer, remember those who have been lost, and celebrate those who survived. It was also exactly a month after she died, and the day that she was supposed to speak as a survivor and inspire those in attendance. Instead her best friend and the boy to whom the message in the book was directed to spoke in her place.

I cannot express enough gratitude to you for this John Green, and I hope you read this while you search through your tags because this is the only way I could think to make sure you got my gratitude. Connor was incredibly excited to receive the book and said it was the best present that he has ever gotten. I hope to be sending you, John Green, one of her books in the near future so that you can see the beauty that she captured through a lens that reflected how beautiful she was inside and out. Even still, I say again, I cannot thank you enough.

p.s. the second (terrible) picture is a note that was for me from someone named Danica I believe. I feel so terrible for not knowing who this kind person is who wrote me this nice encouraging note, so if anyone could tell me, that would be wonderful.

(bringing this back because I posted it during vidcon and I don’t think he saw it)

The best kind of note.

All the awards to John Green.
